SPEECH APHASIA

INTRO: Imagine being an individual who could not communicate or comprehend information that is nessicary to interact in everyday life. The frustration and difficulty that a person with this condition called aphasia deals with is all encompassing in their everyday life and forces them to react in a variety of different ways. Although aphasia is often not known about by the general public, there are more than twice the cases of aphasia then there are of individual's with Parkinson's Disease. Today, in the United States alone there are more than one million cases of aphasia and many more family member and friends that are affected by it.

Thesis: Because of the growing population of individuals living with aphasia, it is crucially important that the general public learns about the overall causes, types, and treatments of aphasia as well as new critical research on the forefront.

Unlike many other types of diseases, the term aphasia covers a wide variety of symptoms as well as many differing degrees and types of the condition. Aphasia is traditionally associated with the language centers of the brain which consist of Broca's Area, and Wernicke's Area, but with the current information being discovered through current research, areas such as the Insula, an area of cortex located deep within the cerebral hemisphere, are slowly being discovered and named. Broca's Area is usually located on the left hemisphere in the inferior frontal gyrus of the frontal lobe. This section of the brain, is currently thought to control the processing of language, speech production and comprehension. l, Wernicke's Area,As Nina Dronkers, PhD, a leading researcher in the field of brain mapping of aphasia, said at a language symposium during a American Psychological Association conference, "it’s much more interesting than that,' referring to Broca's and Wernicke's areas, "There are many, many other areas involved in language processing". Although there is still must to be learned and researched about in the field of neural pathways of speech and comprehension.

CURRENTLY PAPER FINISHED RESEARCH:http://stroke.ahajournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/30/7/1370

Memantine and Constraint-Induced Language Therapy in Chronic Poststroke Aphasia:A Randomized Controlled Trial

This study is currently recruiting patients.
Verified by Gabinete Berthier y Martínez March 2005

Sponsors and Collaborators:	Gabinete Berthier y Martínez
H. Lundbeck A/S
Information provided by:	Gabinete Berthier y Martínez
ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier:	NCT00196703
Purpose

Aphasia, the loss or impairment of language caused by brain damage, is one of the most devastating cognitive impairments of stroke. Aphasia can be treated with combination of speech-language therapy and drugs. Conventional speech-language therapy in chronic aphasic subjects is of little help and several drugs have been studied with limited success. Therefore other therapeutic strategies are warranted.
Recent data suggest that drugs (memantine) acting on the brain chemical glutamate may help the recovery of cognitive deficits, included language, in subjects with vascular dementia. The present study examines the safety profile and efficacy of memantine paired with intensive language therapy in subjects with stroke-related chronic aphasia (more than 1 yr. of evolution).
Condition	Intervention	Phase
Aphasia
Stroke
Drug: memantine
Procedure: constraint-induced language therapy
Phase IV
MedlinePlus related topics: Aphasia; Stroke
Genetics Home Reference related topics: Stroke

Study Type: Interventional
Study Design: Treatment, Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo Control, Parallel Assignment, Safety/Efficacy Study

Official Title: A 24-Week Pilot, Double-Blind, Randomized, Parallel, Placebo-Controlled Study of Memantine and Constraint-Induced Language Therapy in Chronic Poststroke Aphasia:Correlation With Cognitive Evoked Potentials During Recovery.

Further study details as provided by Gabinete Berthier y Martínez:
Primary Outcome Measures:
Language function (overall aphasia severity).
Communication

Secondary Outcome Measures:
Depression
Cognitive evaluation of language function
Changes in event-related potential

Research Projects looking for participants:This study is currently recruiting patients.
Verified by Department of Veterans Affairs September 2005

Sponsored by:	Department of Veterans Affairs
Information provided by:	Department of Veterans Affairs
ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier:	NCT00223847
Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of intensive, constraint induced language therapy (CILT) for individuals with chronic aphasia compared with traditional aphasia therapy. The specific objectives of the proposed research are to determine the effects of therapy type (CILT vs. traditional) and dose density (intensive or distributed) on speech therapy outcome. In addition, we will investigate the functional and qualitative impact of these interventions on functional communication.

Dopaminergic Enhancement of Learning and Memory in Aphasia

This study is currently recruiting patients.
Verified by University Hospital Muenster April 2007

Sponsored by:	University Hospital Muenster
Information provided by:	University Hospital Muenster
ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier:	NCT00102869
Purpose

The purpose of this study is to determine whether levodopa, in combination with a high frequency language training, is effective in boosting naming performance in patients with aphasia.
Condition	Intervention	Phase
Cerebrovascular Accident
Aphasia
Drug: levodopa
Phase IV
MedlinePlus related topics: Aphasia; Stroke
Genetics Home Reference related topics: Stroke

Study Type: Interventional
Study Design: Treatment, Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo Control, Crossover Assignment, Efficacy Study

Official Title: Dopaminergic Enhancement of Learning and Memory (LL_001, Project on Aphasia)

Further study details as provided by University Hospital Muenster:
Primary Outcome Measures:
Boost in naming performance (percent correct) through levodopa as compared to placebo
Brain activity pattern in successfully trained patients

Secondary Outcome Measures:
Stability of naming performance after one month and six months post treatment

http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/aphasia/aphasia.htm#What_research_is_being_done

http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/aphasia/aphasia.htm

Rose 2006

http://stroke.ahajournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/30/7/1370

Aphasia Community Groups
Stroke and aphasia support groups listed by state.
State Representatives Network
Volunteers who can answer questions about local resources for aphasia.
NAA Young People's Network
For younger people (up to age 30) with aphasia.

There are approximately twice as many people in the United States who have aphasia than there are individuals with Parkinson's Disease.
Yet the general public knows very little about aphasia. Of the estimated 400,000 strokes which occur each year, 80,000 result in aphasia. Approximately one million people, or one out of every 275 adults in the United States, have some type of aphasia. Ninety percent of those with aphasia who participated in this survey feel the public's awareness of this disability is minimal.

http://www.aphasia.org/naa_materials/impact_of_aphasia_on_patients_and_families.html

http://www.nidcd.nih.gov/health/statistics/vsl.asp

ORGANIZATIONS:Organizations

American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)
10801 Rockville Pike
Rockville, MD 20852-3279
actioncenter@asha.org
http://www.asha.org
Tel: 800-638-8255
Fax: 301-571-0457

National Aphasia Association
7 Dey Street
Suite 600
New York, NY 10007
naa@aphasia.org
http://www.aphasia.org
Tel: 212-267-2814 800-922-4NAA (4622)
Fax: 212-267-2812

Aphasia Hope Foundation
2436 West 137th Place
Leawood, KS 66224
judistradinger@aphasiahope.org
http://www.aphasiahope.org
Tel: 913-402-8306 866-449-5804

National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD)
National Institutes of Health, DHHS
31 Center Drive, MSC 2320
Bethesda, MD 20892-2320
nidcdinfo@nidcd.nih.gov
http://www.nidcd.nih.gov
Tel: 301-496-7243/800-241-1044 800-241-1055 (TTD/TTY)

I sprained my knee after pulling my quad. actually, because i pulled my quad about a week ago, my leg was weakened causing me to hyperextend my knee causing it to sprain while playing a game of boot with alumni hellfish and drunk bmonks(no i was not intoxicated)....and oh yeah sectionals is this weekend. I've been training for soo long this semester. i am slightly depressed.
the hellfish did take the section which is awesome. I couldn't partake in the jelloshot easter egg hunt afterwards at the hellfish house because of my knee. bummer. i went to the hospital today and am in an immobilizer...i am sooo angry. the possibly last tourny of the semester and my knee is retarded. hopefully we make it to regionals and ill be better by then. (fingers crossed). YARG, but I still love ultimate...more then any other activity ive ever done

OK, so I'm not as upset that I can't go home for Easter as I am about the fact I can not go to URichmond to watch the Hellfish play in sectionals. Yes indeed, I'm sick and twisted. So this weekend, since the majority of my friends are NOT going to be here. I will work at dhall, and play lots of catch with people who are not on the team, and will...do work for school or something? I'm sure my GPA could use a little sprucing up after the neglect it has dealt with due to ultimate. I can't deal with these retarded GenEds though.

I've decided sleep is pretty much completely unnessicary so FUCK it. I got a good 4 hours in. With the rest of the time I can play Ultimate (work on the accuracy of my throws because they are pretty gosh darn awful for how long I've been playing. They good throws, they don't wobble; they just hit random people lounging in the quad (which is funny, but NOT ideal). Anyways with the rest of my time I plan to drink wine on the roof of the Bitch Monkey House while jamming with Spooner and Animal. With the rest of the time, I plan to either be at the Hellfish House playing Headcrusher, drinking with American, or playing Frisbee Golf on the quad. Homework will fit in at 6:30AM in the morning and any other random hours fun is not occurring with frisbee related activities. Everything else should fit in somewhere.
....last thursday I shaved (with Banga and American) a boy who was standing completely naked in the middle of the Hellfish living room, was in a play (which had Pat Sajak, a Ninja, the PoPo, Dr. Evil Calculus, and several concubines), watched "a shy pee-er" pee an artistic representation of flounder outside the hellfish house, had a fellow frosh bonk get a sweet fo-hawk, watched Neo get completely drunk trying to get her DCI gold metal back by play a very unsuccessful game of 1 million questions. I haven't done my task yet....but I heard its pretty bad. It involves Convict, American, and Flounder. I'm fucked. d

I effin' love ultimate

This weekend, I played some sick Ultimate, had my first successful lay out (tip of the finger catch), camped out on the beach in North Carolina, and talked about world issues with a bunch of the enviornmentalist hippies on my team. I fuckin' love Ultimate soo much. I love my Bitch Monkeys soo much. Also the Hellfish. I can't get over how great my life has become since I've come here. If this section of my life never ended I think I could be content with it.

Also, I think I've going Vegetarian. I was toying with the idea in my mind for a while and slowly I've just starting cutting out meat. And now I go a couple days without eating it without even knowing it. so i dunno. I don't think I am going to classify myself as a Veg just yet. We'll see.

So I think I'm going to start training for sectionals, regionals, and maybe maybe nationals. I've been doing sprints, and plenty of plyos so I hope that will help.

I like red-heads that play frisbee and the guitar and can beatbox. Evidentally, there are more than one of them on the team. 3 to be exact. and they are all taller than me. fantastic. cuddletown population gingerkids and wawa. shwing! haha....college is the shit.

we also kidnapped a bmonk out of her dorm last night for her bday. we walk in there and she is on freakin' facebook on her 20th bday. sooo we duct taped her feet and hands, threw her in the back of the car, and immediately brought her to the hellfish house and made her drink an entire pitcher. you can't not celebrate your damn birthday when you're a monkey. f that.

I guess the Bitch Monkeys are pretty confident in my drinking abilities cause they nominated me to do the honorary disc race at the Frisbee party tonight. I only found out yesturday because we weren't even sure if the tourny was still on until last night.
I'm kind of bittersweet about the whole thing. Its awesome they nominated me but thats 5.5 beers to drinking out of a disc as fast as possible. I've done it once before verses Founder and we tied although he refuses to accept that because it was after the beer pong tournament.
Anyways, now I'm just trying to prep myself for it. Excessive water drinking to espand the belly region etc. I guess we'll just have to see how it goes tonight.

Vow for Change.

I probably should just turn my energy inward to work on myself instead of being so unsuccessfully boy crazy. Its not that I don't know what I should be doing with myself its whether or not I actually feel like doing it. I should probably hang out with Spooner and NT more and tap into my creative Amazonian side.

Tomorrow is my starting day. I guess we'll just see where this goes. Hopefully somewhere worth while.

...PS.

I completely forget what its like to be in love. I don't know why I'm reminded of this now....Jackie and I have been talking a lot about boys. We think Matthew is in the midst of his first love....(its pretty freagin adorable). I like helping him plan presents and Valentine's Day romantic moves- the ramapo carnation thing OF COURSE. I found out he's leaving notes for her at random times through out the school day (kinda reminds me of Junior year Vday..aww)
Anyways, I think its a good thing I forgot what its like because I care less about recapturing it at this point in time. If I did remember, I would prob be miserable right about now but I'm not at all. This also might be because I've seen so many overbaring, annoying college boyfriends this year and its just like "NO THANK YOU."

I'm not a playa, I just crush a lot. lol. right. anyways, this could all be some subconscious coping mechanism. Either way, its working so whatevs.

Next weekend is going to be soo drunk and frisbee will be played too.

Home this weekend which is nice cause my family is wiped out from being in the city the past 2 and a half weeks for castings. Mom's b-day is coming up so we went out to dinner and celebrated a bit tonight. I also went to Cabaret night last night and saw Annie, Ryan, and of course the JOLINATOR. I loove Mr. Jolin cause he is still such a shaggy strawberry.
It was pretty crazy seeing Sarrocco and fellow bandies again-I feel so radically far from that time.

Saturday was chill. Jackie and I got some pedicures at this little hole in the wall spa but it was soo nice just to chill out. After dinner, we just chilled at home and watched 12-pack aka my 2-grade swim coach/lifeguard on I Love New York....effin' weird. Then shit got even weirder because a commercial for "The Agency" came on which is a Modeling Agency Reality TV show and its about Wilhelmina sooo Jackie knows a bunch of peeps on it including her agent. Its kinda lame though-everyone was told to act like an asshole. I met Pink, Lola, and the Scottish lady and they are all cool as hell but they act like douche bags on the show. idk...its just effin' weird. Jackie isn't on it but it would be soo cool if she was cause I'm a VH1 nerd. Anyways...fashion week ended up being much less exciting show-wise this season... She got 2 smaller shows but she was in the running for a Calvin Klein show and a Marc Jacobs in Milan or something. too bad it didn't work out, but its still excitin'!!
Alright, I'm going to go watch a movie with the fam. peaces

Date was ok. Kind of lame. A massive black football player asked for my number today... I was with some of my friends and we just laughed because its been rediculous like this all week.its just so absurd because he's a football player and im a band nerd and because no one asks my number (prior to this week evidentally).

Anyways, I found an article about my sis on line and we were pretty excited. like this doesn't happen to people you know. she also got some new pics for her portfolio and they are pretty sweet. im gonna try to post them.

http://mnpmodels.canalblog.com/archives/2006/11/03/3071472.html

I've got a date tonight. Its soo old school too. I met this kid through a mutual friend and he asked for my number after dancing all night. I'm pretty excited. The kid is not my type at all, but he likes music, and I'm pretty sure thats all I need to know to carry on a decent conversation.

so we'll see. I'm still in luve with the sophmore frisbee player, but maybe I'll just be a P-I-M-P for a while. lol. im pretty lame. oh well.

jackie is getting ready for the next fashion week. all her new pics are up on wilhelmina. she looks so different, but still cute. im just happy that the waif model is forcefully going out of style for jackie's sake. two european models died in spain and since then milan, and spain have created a rule that models must have a bmi of atleast 18.5 and new york is following. jackie said there are a good amount of plus size models at her walking lessons so thats pretty cool. i wish i was home cause once again im not going to be able to get back. bummerville.

Life is awesome. this is the happiest ive ever been consecutively. Life just feels in sync and correct. It snowed for the 1st time this year. possibly a snow day tomorrow?? Still haven't hung out with the frisbee kids on the weekends because I've been road trippin everywhere. This weekend it was Washington DC for a concert at the 9:30 club. I was supposed to visit Henry but it didn't work out. Murder By Death played with 3 other bands including Thursday. I really liked MBD (they had an electric cello with this cutest little girl playing it) but the rest weren't really my style. I still grabbed the lead singer of Thursday when we were in the front of the crowd and he ran up to lisa and I...its seemed appropriate. he held lisa's hand and sang to her later in the show...she was stoked. I probably would have been more excited if it was Jared Leto, not because i like 30 seconds to mars or anything, just because its jared leto. : ) anyways, we went with this other kid Brandon, who lisa met through mutual friends. really cute. i think lisa and him are getting together--sigh nothing like scene L-O-V-E. saturday-pre=gamed at brandon's house and listened to some old school 90's music in prep for next weekend's 90's party (Lisa and I are dressing up as the Silver Snakes/Maybe Green Monkeys? team from the Legends of the Hidden Temple-Helmets and knee pads and all....sooo excited. anyways the party we went to was at this sweet house on south mason where the girls from the radio station live. it was just rediculous. one dude, had a carton of pogs and when he dropped one in your beer you were expected to chug. I got two pogs and I love them-one is a West Virginia pog-random and amazing as hell and the other one is of Peppe Le Peu the snunk. Some rediculous dancing occurred on tables and staircases. this type of behavior went on until 3 when we left for ihop. Ihop is a beautiful thing at 3 in the morning. then back to brandon's for garden state. yey jerzey, we made it through about 5 minutes before we passed out. it was a lil aqkward though because it was brandan and lisa and then me and one of brandon's friends, travis. brandon and lisa were gone when we woke up soo it was just me and this kid i did know. i just pretended to fall back asleep instead of dealing with it. woke up at 8 am to snow..and a hangover. overall a sweet weekend. next weekend is the march on dc with some gifford girls. u all should goo too.

Evidentally, I've been watching too much Blow/drug movies in general. The last two nights, I've had terrible dreams that Mexicans were holding me hostage because I found out about their drug trafficing. I'm so fucked up. People kept on holding guns to my head therefore, sleep hasn't been a restful thing for me since I've been at school.
The one thing that, as always, is saving my sanity is ultimate. I'll be in a really awful mood and then I'll play for a bit and I feel soo much better. On top of loving it, the girls are rediculously fun. After practice, American, Zorro, and I went and did some conditioning in the pool and then crashed in the hot tub and sauna....soooo nice.
My 'longing' feeling has diminished slightly, but its still this nagging annoyance inside because I miss people. I think it was harder to leave this 2nd time around. oh well. Off to class I guess. peace.

I don't know what really caused it, but tonight I was put in the most wonderful mood. I've been hanging out with my family a lot which sounds pretty dweeby but they are actually a hell of a lot more exciting then the parties being thrown by my friends. Last night and tonight I hung out with Leah,my 20 year old couz from BC and Jakki. Just good talks all around. I really love being home with my family. Although, a bit insane, they're fun to be around.
Jakki and I stayed up tonight and watched some MXC which is just fantastic. Childhood memory talks ensued and things I haven't thought about in years came flooding back to me. I just tried to think about all the sweet memories from childhood until now, and I came up with a ton which is good because it means
1. My memory is still functioning properly
2. I've had a pretty rocking life and if I died today, I would be bummed but atleast I've got some stellar memories.

so not too shabby. I'm feeling positively jolly. And A Merry Christmas to you.
